That's usually a difference in resolution. The vertical lines most of
the time will simply be less visible, and at one point, when far enough,
you will only see very faint vertical lines and not horizontal ones.
More elegant would be something ala ICE background (as in looking like
that, not that the problems are similar) where the grid increments are
overriden based on zoom factor.
