It's an aliasing problem. In a perspective view, when looking at a flat
angle, the horizon becomes one gray mess.
Is there a way to switch on anti-aliasing? If not, it would be nice if
they were updated in whatever way to become more appealing to the eye.

That's usually a difference in resolution. The vertical lines most of
the time will simply be less visible, and at one point, when far
enough, you will only see very faint vertical lines and not horizontal
ones.
More elegant would be something ala ICE background (as in looking like
that, not that the problems are similar) where the grid increments are
overriden based on zoom factor.

Yuck!
This is a relic from the old ages. How about fading those lines
in/out?
