I wouldn't recommend changing from Softimage to Maya. I've been there and back. But if you dare to give it a try, start browsing the web for Maya scripts. You will need a lot of them to have something that will perhaps perform like Softimage. Not to mention to take a deep breath before diving into the hypershade node, maya nodes and where is the connection that you are looking.
