Did you draw a render region? It's a render-time effect.

Subject: Deforming instances on strands

Sorry for interrupting your Friday beer, folks, but aZZZny other trick to 
deforming instances on strands than using instance shape and setting the 
StrandDeform property to True? All the doc seems to say it's that simple, but 
no matter what I try, my instances stay attached to my particles rather than 
deforming on my strands.
