Ok! As far as I know there's no way of having realtime feedback inside Si
of what the finished thing will look like, so there is a lot of irksom
back-and-forth between editing and 3d.

So one way of previewing is to have the scene inside Your editing software,
but another way is to have a version of your scene with your rendered
material applied to the objects.  But I think having it inside
smoke/d3/fc/whatever is better, as you CSN prewiew the timing much better.
But ultimatly that's up to you.  My only real advice is to stay out of d3
as much as possible.
