I can't comment on Houdini since I don't know it well enough yet.

Katana seems to be very popular for asset management/lighting/shading/rendering.

Clarisse iFX is becoming an interesting option as well.

I don't know how much I'm allowed to divulge, but both Maya and Fabric Engine have strong desires and ambitions to address this facet of production as well, but it'll take some time before they become viable solutions, if they even work out at all. Only time will tell, but I'd keep my eyes open.

We still have Softimage available for the next couple years, so we have time to study other alternatives.

Here at Hybride, we've already started working on our own custom in-house Fabric Engine based solution, but it's very tightly linked to Softimage. There is a big base of our tools that should be easily portable to another software, but we have time and we will keep a close eye on what happens in this area before we make a decision on the right direction to take.

The point is that we all still have a couple years to figure this stuff out. I personally recommend you take your time and study all your options before you jump ship. There might be a few surprises along the way. Something might even come out of left field and completely revolutionize the way we work. But that's just my opinion. For all I know, Houdini might be the next big thing in lighting/shading/rendering.

Hi everyone.

Just out of curiosity i wanted to post this,
How many people are planning to take their lighting/shading/rendering pipelines to houdini? In my opinion Maya is not a possibility and well modo, while it isn't that bad just seems to be missing some stuff? So what are your opinions..

Cheers,
Ogi.
