I am in both camps:

Education and VFX/Animation.

I am always jumping back and forth between the two, which makes for less
sleep than I'd like, but
I'm used to it.

SI is the easiest of the two (Max was never really an option I felt was for
me) to create something amazing.
By either a single artist, or a team.

By either a student or a pro.

There really is no way the types of projects I take on, and my students
take on, could be done as quickly and as cleanly with Maya.
I should know, since I have taught (and continue to teach) both. I also use
both, and continue to do so. Use the best tool for the job.
The great thing about Softimage is that the best tool, is the only tool for
99% (maybe 98%, in a nod to The Mill's brilliant ad) for the job.
