Houdini's interface can't be customised as much as Maya or even XSI, something 
I have already highlighted and the SDK although it is available imho it is not 
very well documented.

But yes, you can write your plugins in C++ or your VEX functions if you need to 
although does not happen often to be honest because you don't need to in the 
first place given the procedural workflow.

For custom code you have multiple areas to play with; pure VEX, VOPs (Vex 
Operators) or even the Wrangle node to run VEX snippets)

Customisable does not come in the form of an API only, and thus I value very 
much how Houdini has been architected.
