AFAIK there's no hidden rig, they are keying bones/joints directly. The only "rig-like" reference is the IK effector, they can't really stick with the manipulator approach because of IK pinning between keyframes.
It's not difficult to code as long as you have access to manipulators (and users don't mind to use a especialized version while animating), raycast + get max weighitng at face (barycentric coord) + bypass selection to the joint.
