Their was a recent FXGuide podcast where Mike Seymour, Jason Diamond and Matt Wallin discuss the visual effects in A Monster Calls.

The art direction is wonderfully crafted (reminds me of the visual narrative of Pan's Labyrinth, which I suppose isn't surprising as Guillermo del Toro produced and financed the director's first film). I had no idea Glassworks (Barcelona) were responsible. Simply stunning, and a fitting XSI swansong.
