Design your own application layer for both indexing and query that knows about both SQL and Solr. Give it a REST API and then your client applications can talk to your REST API and not have to care about the details of Solr or SQL. That's the best starting point.

i would ideally like to keep mssql and bolt solr on top of this so that we
