Bruce, I just checked this. Eventhough the package is listed in: http://jucr.opensolaris.org/pending/en/catalog.shtml and detailed information can be seen at: http://jucr.opensolaris.org/pending/manifest/0/modules%403.2.6%2C5.11-0.101%3A20090409T201103Z
the package cant be found in packagemanager. I have been trying to examine this error, and it seams that the catalog is faulty. Can you please try and do: pfexec pkg refresh Let me know if python crashes with a UpdateLogException. If this is the case, packagemanager is not seeing the complete catalog.
