South Sudan bombed while Mbeki visits JUBA, 22 May 2012 - As the chairperson of the African Union High Implementation Panel (AUHIP) Thabo Mbeki visited South Sudan yesterday for consultative meetings with the government of South Sudan, Khartoum on the other hand dropped seven bombs and more than ten bombs today morning in Warguet of Northern Bahr El Ghazal.
South Sudan’ information minister Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin told press that the attack occurred despite the UN Security Council resolution of 2046. He explained that Khartoum still continues its acts of aggression against the Republic of South Sudan in disregard of the resolution. “The government of South Sudan views these current acts of aerial and ground incursions by Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) on its territory as ‘serious’ threats to both regional and international security”, Dr. Marial pointed out. Dr. Marial reiterated the support and the commitment of the government of the Republic of South Sudan to the efforts of the African Union High Implementation Panel in reaching an agreement on all outstanding issues with Sudan. “You are all aware that former President Mbeki was here yesterday and he had a good meeting with our President Salva Kiir Matardit who assured him that the delegation from South Sudan will attend the talks to be resumed in Addis Ababa once a date is fixed for the negotiations, but what do we get? Bombardments”, wondered Dr. Marial. Dr. Marial further said South Sudan’s air traffic control department on Sunday morning recorded an over flight of an Antinov aircraft over Juba. He said this was an indication of violation of international laws in flying over a territory of a foreign state. He urged the United Nations Security Council and the African Union to order the Republic of Sudan to halt its attacks on the Republic of South Sudan. Meanwhile Col. Phillip Aguer, the spokesperson of the South Sudan Army said the intention of Khartoum’s 21st and 22nd attacks on South Sudan territory was to prevent any mediation from taking place.
