"Sam, you cannot live your whole life with worries about what could have been with your son. He would not want you to do it, and it will only lead to missing out on those that are still alive. You have family and friends that are here for you."
"You're right. But I can't let him go. Not yet."
Jared reached a hand across the table and placed it on his friend's shoulder. "You should not feel that you have to. I am not asking you to forget your son and pretend he was never here. I am asking you to live life for his sake. Live the life he would have wanted you to. He would not have wanted you to sit there and throw everything away thinking about could have beens. It is not respectful of his memory."

"I hear you, but thanks to some bigoted *******{insert favorite obsenity here}, my time of mouring was taken from me. They used a sacred time to make some kind of perverted point.", Lasiter was letting go for the first time. The deep seeded anger was started to show. Sadly, it was short lived, as he stopped to regain some sense of composure.
"When my immediate duties are done, I will take time for myself. Time for Sam. I just have to get through the upcoming visit from the new Venasian head of state. It is also why I called you... I have some things that I need handled, and I just can't do it now. I need someone else to do it...", he was more under control, but only because of the slight change in topic.
It was clear to Jared from the change in topic that the CinC wanted to move on, and he did not press him to continue talking about Sam. They were in a public place. "I have been wondered why you would need to call me to Spacedock. I cannot imagine that you don't have a staff on hand that can handle most cases."
"The staff is great. However, this is something special. This project is something that I need someone that I can brief and turn loose. Someone that is fair, jusicious, and won't be swayed by political pressures, or by me. I need a person that I can give this project to and then forget about it. Still interested?", he asked half serious, half making light of things.

"The short version of the situation is that on more than one police action, Starfleet is being blamed for mistreatment of prisioners up to and including what one could call war crimes. I sent someone to investigate, and they were caught up in it. Meaning while they were inspecting things in teh field first hand, they were caught by one of the factions and interrogated....", They were in a public place, and couldn't say exactly what he wanted to. He hoped that the pause would let Jared make the right conclusion.
"He was then recovered by another faction and... interrogated again. Even after his identity was revealed and confirmed. He reported that he was pressured by a Starfleet admiral to white wash his report. I need to know the truth. The whole truth. Is Starfleet commiting these acts of barbary? Are we involved in a coverup? Who is *really* doing it? The whole brutal truth. I want to bring those responsible to justice, and I want it handled without bias. There will be LOTS of pressure on this one, and I need the judicial rock of Gibraltar on this one.", he continued.
