"I have a bottle of ale I was saving for a special occasion," she offered.
Ael's smile became far more genuine. "It would not be a breach of
confidance," she told her, "for Matthew has recounted this story
himself, at dinner parties back on ch'Rihan. I would enjoy
recounting it for you." She stopped and turned to face Carrhae.
"Would it offend you," she asked, "were I to tell you that I did not
expect to like you?"
Carrhae laughed, her first relatively relaxed expression since the
women stepped
out of the house. "Indeed?"
She led the way back towards the house, but instead of re-entering the living
area, she took a stairway that led directly to the upstairs suites.
"I find it almost strange, however, to learn that I actually do not
find you lacking. In fact, given enough time, I would be surprised
were we not to become friends."
Strangely, Carrhae found that she wanted Ael's friendship. She knew that the
woman had similar standards regarding honor and--also importantly--she had
developed a close friendship with Matt. "Somehow, I would not be surprised
either.
"Poor Matthew."
"Matthew and I share a friendship, the depth of which I had never
expected to have with a human. I wouild ask you not to see me as any
kind of threat, because our friendship is very important to me, and I
would mourn it should it go away."
They had entered her master suite and crossed to a sitting room off the
bedroom.
After offering Ael a seat at a table with various small refreshments, Carrhae
palmed a recessed cabinet and drew out a decanter. She found two glasses and
set them on the table. As she poured the blue-tinted libation, she replied,
"You have little to worry about in that regard. I believe one of the reasons
he invited you this evening was that he hoped we would come to at least
tolerate one another."
