1. Read the OP's post again for his own examples.
2. In my case, colours are a big deal. Lots of calendars, the colours
are essential for usability. I can't get the iPad calendar syncing
satisfactorily directly with Google because of this problem. This is
why i'm a happy to be a spanning sync customer.
3.  Why the need to shoot this down? Do you work for Spanning Sync? If
you don't like the idea and are not a dev, er, surely just move on?
Personally I don't find your own use case compelling (sync cloud to
mac) but i don't feel the need to rubbish it.....
