Here some suggestions in solving your problem:
- is the OS not the source of your problem (swapping , amount of filehandles
?)
- from my unix experience i know that actions on collections should be
properly locked
- is the collection that is created extremely large ? we are experiencing
very
poor performance on large collections at the moment

AFAIK all possible combinations of optimizing/deleting/etc have been
tried.
