Ray -

I guess I am confused as to the purpose of the SpectraSource site. I read
on the home
page that:

"Community Source allows the entire Macromedia Spectra community to
contribute
to the product's direction and development"

But then I see from the traffic on the list here that we only have a
mechanism for
dealing with "1-3 line fixes and mods" which seems at odds for dealing with
"direction"
of Spectra.

To my mind something like the custom security model written by Webworld
Studios is
directional -- 1 -3 line bug fixes are, well, bug fixes. I would contend
that
if community source is going to allow Spectra to GROW the SpectraSource site
should
accommodate -- in fact should actively seek out -- things like the custom
security model
mentioned above. As such we must address the points that Spike and Michiel
bring up.

Again, perhaps I'm being crazy, but I do think people are over-reacting a
bit.

First off, mods like the security overhaul, or any other mod that completely
rewrote low level architecture, would not be supported on our site.
Something that large would be a major fork of the product and we are not
going to do anything that will fork the source. Again, we are talking about,
primarily, bug fixes and improvements. These are the same things that many
of us post on spectra-talk and the Spectra forums every day. I don't think
Macromedia is trying to steal your hard work. If you find a bug, and know
the fix, and plan on sharing it with the world, why not submit it to the
site?

Plus - consider this - once your mod becomes part of the Spectra source, it
becomes _much_ easier to work with when deploying to a new site. Instead of
grabbing fixes from here and there, you can simply do a one-click upgrade to
get all current bug fixes and mods. So - if you have 1.5.1 on cd, you can
have your copy of Spectra at the client site updated w/ all bug fixes in
just a few minutes.

p.s. Anyone else getting duplicate postings?
