Currently my pingable devices have Value_When_Yellow = 1, Value_When_Orange = 3, and Value_When_Red = 0 (this last one makes the model 'insignificant'). The pingables seem like they are boolean values. Either they are green (pinging), or they are red (unreachable). There is no orange or yellow state. You can set the value of the red alarm to whatever you like, but the alarm part doesn't really care, it's a red alarm so it's going to be critical. The value of the When_Red, if I interpret the docs correctly, will affect the roll-up value of the container the device is in, but that's all it will affect. If I had a container full of pingables set to When_Red = 1 (now a 'significant' model), then I would see a critical alarm for the pingable device, and the container would get a little yellow triangle as soon as one went unreachable, and a red triangle after 10 (the default red threshold value) devices went unreachable (plus I get 9 more critical alarms, one for each unreachable device).
That's my interpretation of the Modeling IT Infrastructure Admin guide for 9.2 on page 181, 249. Please let me know if I misread that. My quest is to have Spectrum throw a minor (yellow) alarm when a pingable device is unreachable. So I am not sure how you are suggesting I change to Initial - Minor. I am aware of why my devices are pingable, SNMP is not available for these devices. Your attachment shows how to change the roll-up value, but I don't believe that has any bearing on the alarm criticality, as I have stated above. I am getting a critical alarm because the device is now 'significant' which simply means the Value_When_Red (the roll-up value) is anything other than zero. Thanks for your response and please let me know if I got something backwards (typical!). -Ken On Mar 18, 2011, at 10:16 PM, CATools Helpdesk wrote: > Hi Ken, > > As I mention previously there might be the devices are not supporting SNMP or > proper MIB is not available hence you can change value from Initial - > Critical , Initial - Major or Initial - Minor.
