The ppp doesn't work at all and since others have got it working with
Debian, I've gone back to the older version.  To speed things up, I've
deleted the ppp directory and recreated from scratch.  Same error.

I think it must be a kernel problem.  Recompiling on this poor old box is a
long process...I'll see if there's anything I missed and try again tomorrow.
