Actually it tirned out that I hadn't set up ppp at all. Setting up a
spoof dialup connection and using its settings for adsl was the first
step to a solution.

| There is someone somewhere who has been building pppd versions with the
| incorrect cpu parameters - 686 - but labeling them as 386. Back in the
| bad old days of the Alcatel only drivers there was a patched pppd rpm that
| gave exactly the same problems. I don't know whether this is your problem
| but it certainly looks familiar :-)
