I don't know if this is a bit late - I have just got back from a very
nice and relaxing holiday without ever turning on a computer :-)
There is someone somewhere who has been building pppd versions with the
incorrect cpu parameters - 686 - but labeling them as 386. Back in the
bad old days of the Alcatel only drivers there was a patched pppd rpm that
gave exactly the same problems. I don't know whether this is your problem
but it certainly looks familiar :-)
