In the end I reinstalled mdk 8.1, initially w/o the speedtouch modem, installed the latest draktools, then ran draknet. Initially the results were disappointing, so I went off to watch the eufa cup match between leeds and grasshoppers. Came back and pppd started up successfully this time. It may be a problem starting the pppd at boot time.
