Sorry for the vague subject line but I don't know what the root of the problem
here is. I have an Alcatel Speedtouch 330 modem, a Pipex ADSL connection in
the UK and speedbundle compiled and installed for pppoatm.

I can't find anywhere in the documentation what commands one has to run in
what order to get things going, however I have been guessing at:
        # modem_run -v 2 -m -f firmware.bin
        # modprobe speedtch
        # pppd call speedtch
in some order.

Issue 1 (the firmware):
***************************
If without speedtch.o inserted I run:
        # modem_run -v 2 -m -f firmware.bin
I get promising stuff in syslog, see extract A below. However a
        # modprobe speedtch
        # cat /proc/net/atm/speedtch\:0
gives:
                Speed Touch 330 (usb-00:10.0-1)
                MAC: 00:90:d0:b3:26:44
                AAL5: tx 0 ( 0 err ), rx 0 ( 0 err, 0 drop )
                Line state unknown, no firmware
so implying that the firmware has not been loaded after all.

If, then, I reboot the machine to make sure everything is cleaned out and try
loading the module first:
        # modprobe speedtch
        # modem_run -v 2 -m -f firmware.bin
I get an error telling me that the device is already in use by another
program, after the same initial stuff in syslog, and there's no nice "line is
up" line at the end.

Issue 2 (persisting anyway):
**********************************
If I ignore the ambiguity about the firmware (after the first method) and
carry on then pppd prints a lot of random stuff to the console and writes to
syslog:
        Nov 3 13:04:17 Haar pppd[11377]: Plugin pppoatm.so loaded.
        Nov 3 13:04:17 Haar pppd[11377]: PPPoATM plugin_init
        Nov 3 13:04:17 Haar pppd[11377]: pppd 2.4.2b3 started by root, uid 0

        Nov 3 13:04:47 Haar pppd[11377]: Connection terminated.

Summary:
************
I am sure that I am being clueless and missing the point, running the wrong
things etc. but I have RTFM several times and can not find any basic usage
information.
If anyone could advise me I would be most grateful.
