thank you for this information.

on win2000, both lights are on when the system boots and stay on. no
special flashing occurs later on, nor during driver reinstall. i reckon
there may be the silly USB1.0 involved somehow. will check indeep on the
win side now that the X side cannot cause harm hereon.
i will keep the list informed if i do find out the problem...
