The kernel found the firmware. It's all my fault. It never occurred to me to try a new version of udev with an old kernel. I've just tested a 2.6.11.9 kernel and the firmware didn't load properly. The left modem light stuck on orange. Please compile udev-056 just the way they say in the LFS book and try again. Hope that helps. Sorry for the trouble I've caused you.
