I think you misunderstood. They are the messages that appeared when the 
connection was working. The problem lies in the fact that they are not 
appearing. The connection seems to be halting before the CHAP authentication 
section.

Is there a way to get pppd to be more verbose in its output so I could try and 
work out where it is failing?
