Andy

Seems you've hit a nail on the head! I looked at the folder
/lib/firmware.... it contains a folder entitled 2.6.15-23-386 which in turn
contains a folder entitled acx along with several files. However, nowhere
is there a sign of speedtch-1.bin and speedtch-2.bin.

When I run the command ls -l /lib/firmware I get the result:

total 4
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2006-05-31 01:53 2.6.15-23-386

speedtch-1.bin and speedtch-2.bin do exist in my home folder, so I suppose
my questions are now:

1) how do I get them to where they should be;
2) how do I recreate the resolv.conf file to mend the broken link I
previously mentioned;
3) what else do I need to do??

Sorry for appearing so thick about this but, as I said, I'm completely new
to Linux and don't want to throw the towel in before I've given it a chance!

Thanks for you help and patience.

Roger.
