In response to the command:  sudo pppd call speedtch

I get the repsonse:

Password:
Plugin pppoatm.so loaded.
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> 0.38

This is followed shortly after by:

LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated.
Modem hangup
