James, I had a problem similar with not getting the acceleration or pull at the high revs and it was the linkage. With the foot flat to the floor, the linkage (and thus throttle discs) should move all the way to the stops on the carbs. I had to loosen the linkages on the sthrottle shaft to allow them to rotate back when I set the cable and the rest of the linkage. i.e the vertical rod part was sitting at it's half way position when the carbs wre at idle against the throttle stops and my foot was not on the pedal. Interesting when hot my idle rises a bit. I did have uneven idle at one point which was due to cracks in the vacuum link rubber joints. They were not obvious and hard to track down.
