Visual inspection of the motor mounts will tell a lot. If you notice that they are torn, then they probably need to be changed. If you rev the engine and the motor moves more than normal, that is a good indication they are bad. If you notice an abnormal knocking noise that occurs when stepping on the gas, between shifts and letting of the gas, they could possibly be bad. The upper mount is the easiest of the three to change and also the easiest to see if it is bad. This is the one on the passenger side between the valve cover and the coolant reservoir. The second motor also know as a "DOGBONE" motor mount is located on the on the drivers side below the intake and battery. This motor mount is easy to see and remove if the intake is removed. The third mounted mount also known as a "DOGBONE" motor mount it the hardest of all to see and remove. Well its not really hard to remove, but you have to remove more things to get to it. Like the passenger side wheel and plastic shield that protects the motor from debris. When changing any motor mount do them one at a time and secure the motor from falling via jack under the motor (if you use a jack place a piece of wood between the jack and the motor to prevent any damage) or you could use an engine hoist.
hope this helps Tom What are the symptoms of motor mounts that need to be replaced and how difficult is a replacement on a 98 SL? -- ----------------------------------------------------------- Don Neudecker -----------------------------------------------------------
