Hi frightened Bird (thats what scarecrow means?) :-) Nice to hear that you want to get a ham radio license, since it looks like you really have to get one :-) the remote controlled radios you find by googling for "dxtuner" or "javaradio" i think. I use my very own receiver, or actually transceiver, but my first number stations i heard with worldband receivers and a home-made 40m ham band receiver some kHz outside the ham band. This radio was made with just one semiconductor part (and external Audio Amplifier), that proves that it is easy to receive the number stations :-) iF you want to get a better radio for yourself, just look around if some ham has a left-over hf receiver he can borrow you "for a while", or if you want to buy something, read the tests (ARRL reports or magazines for example). I have a really tiny portable 12 band transceiver (this type is spreading like rats in the ham world, if you guess what brand/type it is you can have a beer :-)), which works good as comm. receiver also.
