Further on Danny's thoughts:

One other thing that has ingratiated me to crews is the offer to run a
conductor back to the head end after he has been left behind to line a
turnout. It is often a walk of a mile or more, and not in the best of
walking situations. Especially with a four wheel drive, I can usually
deliver the crewman right to the head end, but even an automobile can get
close; or simply the offer is enough to let the crewman know that you are
willing to make his job a little less onerous, and shows that you recognize
some of the problems.
