Several years ago, I was in Cadiz, Calif., smack dab in the middle of
the California desert, shooting the Santa Fe Cadiz turn delivering cars
for interchange to the Arizona & California. Cadiz is probably the
lonliest place on the Needles Sub. After the power ran around the cars
to pick up, the brakeman attached "fred" and walked over to my car like
it was part of the job, and asked me for a ride to the head end.

"Bet this saves you a long walk," I said.

"Walk? Heck, there's always railfans here to give me a ride..." he said.
