Ahhh... Finally, a topic about which I actually have something to add! 

Sam Reeves is absolutely right. Retouching is extremely commonplace in the
media today. I'm an editor for a music magazine, and there are hardly any
photographs that come to us from the record companies or publicity firms that
aren't retouched. At times, they do so much retouching it'll make a 50-year-
old singer look like he or she is 18! It can be quite jarring, believe me....

I would guess, though, that this trend hasn't really taken hold in the rail
mags, except for the technical things Sam mentions (color correction and
scratches), but it's certainly true that reality isn't always what it
seems....
