Retouching photos was an issue as long as there has been photography -- it's
just easier and more available now.   Retouching should be part of your
contracts and aggreements with companies and magazines buying your photos.
Ethical firms will contact you about retouching, or will request the right to
edit when they buy the photo.

Also, Railfan-oriented magazines often won't retouch anything unless it's
necessary since most editors understand the photography aspect of the hobby.
However, railroads will think nothing of retouching a photo, and since
railroad art departments are less familiar with lineside environments than the
shooters, they will often make mistakes.  There's a famous Santa Fe p.r.
glossy of FT's lined up, and the one nearest the camera has no cab door.  I
remember at R&R we got at least two serious letters from people asking if that
was a one-off FT, when it fact the air bruch artist wasn't aware there was a
door behind the pole he removed.

Always consider the source or company when viewing, or submitting, photos
