I was in Rome, New York last Tuesday evening. This is Conrail's busy
Chicago Line in central NY. At the Amtrak station, it was too dark to
take photos, so I just watched the passing parade of freights. However, I
knew that Amtrak train 283 would make a westbound station stop at 7:21pm.
I set up my camera on a tripod, planning to take some time exposures when
the train paused.

The train rolled into the station and stopped. One problem -- the Genesis
locomotive had all three headlights blazing and I knew I wouldn't get any
kind of photo. I shook my head and didn't even approach the camera.

The engineer obviously saw my despair. He gave me a short "toot", shut
off the lower headlights, and put the upper light on "low". I was now
able to get off a few shots, with the train illuminated by the station
lights and a bit of moonlight. I gave him a wave of appreciation, he put
all the lights back on "high", and roared off to continue his trip to
Niagara Falls.

Whether the photos come out or not, I won't forget this engineer's
considerate action.
