Having once worked at Fotomat (Remember their kiosks?), I'd have
customers who'd drop off their film in the protective canisters, and
we'd write up the orders. Most people manning the kiosk would remove the
film from the canister and then chuck the latter.

That means if you go into a camera shop and ask politely, you could get
a bunch of them free of charge. One camera store not far from where I
live does that with a big box on the sales floor.
