My Bogen pistol grip does not, slide, flop or flounder. It has a tension
adjustment that works just fine. I agree that pistol grips have a bad
reputation, particularly the Slik but it is not is a class with the Bogen.
I don't own $10,000 worth of camera and lens, more like $2,000.. If I was
working with studio or field cameras the weight might be a factor but I
don't know many railroad photographers who do. While my pistol grip will
rotate 90 degrees like a ball head, the lens and camera become very
unweildy. With my Nikon 8008S and 80-200 f2.8 Nikor in a full rotation Kirk
bracket and my Bogen grip I have infinite flexibility. When I want to go
vertical its a simple thumb screw rotation. I don't have to flop the full
weight of camera and lens 90 degrees to get there. Its more like flying an
airplane with a stick as opposed to using a two handed yoke.

My original posting was prompted on a photo of Ted Benson in the July issue
of Railfan & Railroad. He appears to be using a Bogen tripod, an Arca ball
head and a lens with a sturdy tripod collar or perhaps a Kirk collar. Ted
is the consumate professional and I don't want to criticize him- I can't-
but I really would reccomend that list members who have not yet, or do not
have the $300 required for a top of the line ballhead, take a look at the
Bogen pistol grip. Its a lot of capability for the money.

My mentor, traveling companion and friend, J.Parker Lamb, uses a home made
wooden contraption made of 1X4s with a wooden handle and tripod screw, to
secure his Nikon 6006 and Nikor 80-200 collarless. With it can shoot rings
around the rest of us and our pricey baubles. When he really wants to
steady the lens he uses a bean bag under the lens hood.

Thanks for the interchange!
