I have looked at the tripod head issue for a while...I've probably
owned a half-dozen of them, of various manufacture. I currently use
the Arca-Swiss quick release system on the NPC pro heads. I have two
of them, purchased used.

There are a zillion tripods and heads out there. Whatever works well
for you...use it! I suppose you could make a case for the automobile
window mounts as well...I'm sure there is some railfan use for them,
too. I have four or five serious railfan friends who I go shooting
with on a regular basis and I think all five own and use different
tripods and heads.

The bean bag is one of the great camera supports of all time. We use
them in many forms for professional video use.

Back to the tripod heads...I find it curious that the Arca-Swiss
ballheads are pricey, but you NEVER see used ones for sale. That says
something...people buy them and keep using them, no matter what kinds
of cameras or lenses they buy, use and resell.

And, I think one of the other items that serious railfan shooters
should own and use regularly is a monopod...there are some "run and
gun" situations where a tripod would cause you to miss the shot
entirely, but a monopod gives you a good tradeoff of stability and
speed of use.

There is no right or wrong way to approach anything in photography. I
find it quite educational to learn about techniques and equipment from
other photographic specialties...nature and wildlife and
photojornalism are two that come to mind...and "steal" stuff from them
that is applicable to the photography of railways as well.
