John,
I've used one of the brushes on slides for years and haven't had any bad
effects to speak of except I'm now a lurker.VBG   Really, I was surprised
that they were being sold because they warn you not to dispose of in trash,
but to return it to them for recycling. The weren't cheap either. I never
replaced mine but still use it on occasion. 
As to cleaning plastic instrument panel of new truck I use the round brush
that is on the end of the shop vaccum when I'm done doing the floor. 
We should really get the manufacturers to make the dash plastic harder, now
theres something maybe we can unite on, harder palstic.
