I found the Columbia River Gorge to be one of the most scenic areas I've ever visited, but I also found it frustrating at times. The BNSF is on one side of the river and the UP on the other. Both lines have their share of really scenic spots, but the places where you can cross the river are very few. I always found it difficult to predict which line would be slow and which one would be active. I would wait along the BNSF for several hours and see nothing, all the while watching 10 UP trains go by across the river. Finally, I would drive over to the UP in frustration. You can all guess what happened next... If I ever go back there (which I hope to do)... I'll be sure to pay Chuck a visit and maybe he can help me with logistics.
