Doug Koontz's program "Drive South" has a segment on the Cass Scenic Railroad 
in it where
he opens with several b&w images (I believe he just shot color slides of his 
b&w prints)
and then at a certain point dissolves one b&w scene into the same scene in 
color -- and,
yes, it's a very effective effect -- and continues with the rest of the segment 
in color.
