Roland:

For the purposes of clarifying 13, 2002, 11.2.3.1.8 (4.b) would Micro lambs or LVL's (Composite solid wood joist) be classified as "Solid Wood Joist" or do they contain too much Glue and Resin? These are typically 1-3/4" x 9 or 11-7/8" or 14" up to 24" The objection to "Composite wood Joist" seems to be the thin web. These composite joist don't have a web. Should we treat them the same as normal solid wood joist? Has the committee discussed these?

I am assuming that the channels open to the adjacent concealed space that is protected - right? So we are dealing with unprotected channels over the 800 sf area. Since the objective of the 3,000 sf RA is to account for fire breaking out of a unprotected concealed space in more than one location, the surrounding protected space should enter the fray right away. The problem is running down a channel between heads with a lot of energy from the unprotected area. A water curtain around the area would reduce the concern somewhat. What say yea AHJ's?

Why not fill the channels with insulation? If the gyp is not DIRECTLY attached to the bottom chord (no C-channel between chord and gyp), then you have to have at least 3-1/2 inches of insulation anyways.

I have a project that is a small bank. In the center of the bank, there is a raised area (20' ceiling; the rest is 9' ceilings). In this raised area, there is gyp board directly to the bottom of TJI construction. The rest of the building has a dropped ceiling so there will be heads in the concealed
space. This raised area is slightly less than 800 sq ft. Do I need to
calculate a full 3000 sq ft in this project for the raised area?
