There is also the question of what happens to the glue at elevated
temperatures not necessarily burning. Could the glue strength weaken at say
200 deg? So you have a shielded fire but controlled. Ceiling temp a few
hundred. Smaller members to avoid the heat sink issue. Does the glue
weaken causing structural failure, perhaps minor or even catastrophic? I
don't' know. But at those temps solid wood and steel are OK.
BUT the whole 3000 sq. ft. thing is IMHO one of the biggest WAGs in the
code. I've been to fires above the ceiling without sprinklers (as allowed
and not 3000 sq.ft.) I don't remember exactly how many heads went off but it
was less then the remote area. A lot of skipping though. Short version,
the FD couldn't get a handle on the fire until the sprinklers were shut off!
I'm thinking this had more value with the old style heads as far as benefit
in controlling the fire.

I suspect they'll burn with much greater vigor due to the glue/resin
you pointed out. On the larger ones, you probably WON'T have the
reduction in combustion due to charring (or at least not nearly as
much) so it won't be that good old Heavy Timber caliber
construction. On the 2x (the focus of this issue), it's probably
immaterial.
