Yes the HADs are for the Automatic Sprinkler Deluge valves that use HADs in series, a bank of mercury check valves and a diaphragm for the initiation of the deluge valve. The 'alarm' interpretation is a bellows on the air circuit which sends an alarm signal to the fire detection system. I am interpreting the HADs as initiation devices however some here disagree.

Pneumatic rate-of-rise detection has been in use as fire alarm since long before there was electric detection. HAD is a spot type of pneumatic rate-of-rise detection (versus linear type). It was the primary method of releasing early CO2 systems, I have seen it in water curtain applications in older shopping malls . They are surprisingly sensitive to temperature change. Rugged, reliable with no power requirements but NOT SUPERVISED. I would follow NFPA 72 testing schedules. They can be successfully proof tested with hot water, but a manometer is required to accurately test sensitivity. Automatic Sprinkler CO of America is the last manufacturer of manometers for this purpose that I'm aware of. Are heat actuated devices (HADS) used to initiate a deluge system via a pneumatic signal considered: 1- a heat detector and so the required testing is per NFPA 72 ? 2- or are the HADS considered part of the deluge system so testing requirements as per NFPA 25 ?
