While I sup[pose a literal interpretation of the code allows you to eliminate vents when you use ESFRs, it does not mean the ESFRs accomplish what vents are inteded to do. Smoke vents can delay operation of ESFRs, so they are not compatible, but neither are ESFRs compatible with non-storage occupancies. Some common conditions in manufacturing do not lend themselves to suppression (flammable liquids, hydraulic systems, sheilded areas, etc). One thing for suere, there is going to be a huge increase in water damage over OH protection.

The bottom line is that ESFRs were developed solely to protect storage, and there has been absolutely no research done to investigate other occupancies. I fully agree that the code requirements for smoke vents result in spending a lot of money for little (if any) benefit, but it's hard to justify a "round peg in a square hole" approach to avoid them.

We're raising our heads out of the sand of being spkr guys and bidding a
manufacturing building (wood and vinyl building products) as ESFR since this
eliminates the need for heat and smoke vents, thus more than compensating
for the increased cost over OH 2 thru most of the building. There will be
some rack storage, but mostly manufacturing.

Without the large fire plume usually associated with rack storage being
absent cause a problem with activation of the ESFR? 40' roof, maybe slightly
higher (yes, expensive couple of feet possible requiring K25's)

Owner is self-insured, generally risk aversive, the now rare breed that
actually wants it done "correctly" although money is not to be ignored. We'd like to advise if this could present problems with adequate protection
levels. I know this was touched on briefly, but its one of those weird eves
when email works but internet doesn't. maybe its on strike in sympathy?
