Don't quote me...Look at your building code...but if you use IBC the standpipe
is required if the top floor is more than 30 ft. above grade

Bottom line-

Get the building code. Generally speaking it is the building code that adopts
NFPA 14 by reference. Therefore, any provision contained in the building code
trump base requirements in the NFPA document.

So unless directed otherwise a building 75' or taller would need a standpipe,
correct?

Your building height as directed in the applicable building code tells you when
you need them, or if specifics of your project require the AHJ, for access
reasons, to treat them as a necessity. I have a 3-story elderly where the CEO
was a volunteer FF and thus wants them added to his job even if not required by
code.

And, what Steve will say.

Subject: Standpipe Question

I recently took a ½ day class on standpipes and have a stupid question to
ask.......

When or what determines if a standpipe is needed? Is it strictly based on a
building being considered high rise (75') or is there more to it than that?
