Kelly,

In our neck of the woods we find that the majority of architects want
the sprinkler heads placed in the center of 2 x 2 tiles and at a
minimum, the quarter points of a 2 x 4 tile. We have worked with the
specifying engineers so that they clearly call for this in their
specifications. The bottom line is that; if it is not asked for BEFORE
the bid it should not be expected without compensation.

The rule of thumb varies with whoever you are trying sell it
too.
Generally when we don't install them center of tile, we at least try to
make them line up and keep the plate off of the grid. When possible, we
try to hit center of tile with drops coming straight out of bottom.
