Jimmy, I would say you should install the return bends on the heads you
reworked. Anything beyond that should be an add to your contract. Did
you have any wording in your proposal and/or contract concerning
existing systems not being modified by your contract?

Wonder when the last inspection was done and who accepted that system in
the first place?

It's hard to tell an owner that his system was put in wrong and now
needs correcting. Most just look at you like you're trying to drum up
more business.

Subject: Return Bends

Good Morning Forum Gurus,

I have a question that I think I know the answer to but, don't want to
accept it yet, so I'd like to get some outside opinions.

Here's what happened. We just completed a small remodel project on a
wet, pond fed system. We only had to alter the office area of a storage
facility. It was around two dozen heads in all. A dozen heads on the
first floor, and a dozen heads on the second floor. The existing system
DID NOT have return bends to feed these pendent heads. On the first
floor we simply re-swung the arm-overs to accommodate a new ceiling
layout. On the second floor we added three new branchlines, each on an
eight inch riser nipple, and kept the existing pipe schedule. I can't
remember if we tore out the existing branchlines, or if we just left
them above the ceiling (I don't hear much about projects once they leave
my office). I had never designed a pond-fed system before, and I simply
overlooked return bends.

We have completely finished this project. Yesterday we received a fax
pointing out our error that return bends were not installed, and telling
us to fix them.

So having said all that (clear as mud right?), do we need the return
bends?
Is it our responsibility to correct that mistake on a previously
accepted system? If we had done a lot of changes, then I think it would
be different; but we just relocated the heads that were already there.
Are there any other exceptions other than 8.14.18.3 and 8.14.18.4 of the
'02 ED.
(8.15.18.3 and 8.15.18.4 of the '07 ED.)? Basically do we have any
other options, other than taking the loss and fixing the arm-overs? If
you do think we have to fix them, do you think we should have fix both
floors or just second?

Thanks for the help all.
